Hairpin Tables – Part 5

As I mentioned in Part 4, we did same things with the large table as we did with the two small ones.

But I neglected to point out, in this photo from Part 4, that the trim is 1/8″ wider than the combined thickness of the pieces comprising the top. I wanted to provide a no slip lip for anybody moving or carrying the tables.

This is the first set of long legs I received. Notice how the ends came completely wrapped and protected.

The new set arrived a few weeks later, but they weren’t protected as well. In my eagerness to check the finish, I forgot to take a photo of how they were wrapped.

All four legs suffered what I’m calling ‘chatter damage’. I probably could’ve had them send me another set, but I was more than ready to finish the project.

I placed my order at what turned out to be probably not the best time. The company had recently parted ways with a manufacturing partner and was in the middle of working on their outstanding orders. That seemed to lead to a bit of chaos at the home office. Each set of legs was supposed to come with four floor protectors. None came with my order. I informed them of this when I told them about the wrong finish.

They said they’d send the floor protectors along with the replacement legs. But before the legs arrived, the above box showed up in our mailbox stuffed to the gills with ten sets. The new legs arrived some time later, devoid of ANY floor protectors.

And here they are, the last of my major outstanding woodworking projects.

I chose these table heights in anticipation of using them when we use our pizza oven in the driveway or if we need them in the back yard when we use our grill.

I sized the solid surface pieces so the two small tables, when combined, would be the same length as the large one. They were off by about 1/16″ owing to the maple not being exactly 3/4″ thick, which is the number I used back when I ‘designed’ the tables. They’ll sit here for now until the temperature rises enough to let me work out there comfortably. But they’ll come in handy when I need someplace to keep things in reach when I resume organizing the garage.

  1. Beautiful! 😍 And congratulations on finishing the project! I know how frustrating delays outside our control can be.

  2. Well done, LT 👍 They look great and I’m sure they’ll provide many years of reliable service. Tom Hodder would be proud!
