Dorothy planned to make a cantaloupe layer cake with orange curd filling and cantaloupe buttercream last night. The curd ended up being too runny and the layers acted like they were on a Slip ‘N Slide. So she scrapped the cake idea and turned the components into a trifle.

This morning, crumbled cake layers were balled up and placed into the waffle iron. They came out nicely. Out of the waffle iron? Not so nicely. You get out of it what you put into it. Crumbles (noun) going in, crumbles (verb) coming out. They were topped with a scoop of cantaloupe buttercream and an orange curd drizzle.

She used the egg whites that were left from making the curd and made orange macarons with an orange chocolate ganache filling.

There are plenty of cake crumbles for several trial and error efforts to perfect this waffle idea. Of course, we’ll nail it with the last batch, leaving us victorious, but out of the raw materials for more. I guess that’s just the way the cake crumbles.
