There were several appearances recently of cereal flavored ice creams in the #PNWFoodies group on Facebook. I hold a fondness for both cereal and ice cream on their own. I’ve also seen cereal or cereal milk-flavored ice creams several times on T.V. in recent years.
I’m also currently in the middle of a homemade ice cream making binge. Cereal-flavored ice cream is where these four fun facts come together in the form of…
LUCKY CHARMS ICE CREAM! (((ice cream)))((ice cream))(ice cream).
I took some time to separate a box of Lucky Charms into its marshmallow and the non-marshmallow components. A baker’s half-sheet and an offset spatula made this tedious task less so. The remaining cereal will be reunited in a bowl in the following days. Mornings, more specifically.
The grains were steeped in the sweetened and heated dairy ingredients for twenty minutes or so and then strained through a fine mesh strainer (don’t worry, the sweet, soggy cereal didn’t go to waste). The grain lent the ice cream base a subtle flavor that wasn’t overpowering and unmistakably cereal milk.
The marshmallows were mixed in at the very end so as not to damage them or have their colors bleed into the base. The marshmallows passed the “overnight in the freezer” test with flying (but not running) colors, retaining their shape and texture perfectly.
This ice cream is really good. I’d like to try more cereal flavors. Which cereal ice cream should I make next? Grape Nuts? Let me know!
Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Cocoa Pebbles
Ooh, or Golden Grahams.
Golden Grahams would also be worth a try.
I think Cinnamon Toast Crunch would be good. I’m unsure if Cocoa Pebbles would hold up or provide enough flavor without fortifying it with ‘real’ chocolate.
This ice cream was so delicious! I think this was the perfect cereal for it, not sure how other cereals would fare but I guess I will find out.
